Temporary Church Closure

posted by Saint Charalambos

Dear friends,

We regret to inform you that an individual who attended the Church service at St. Charalambos on Saturday 19th September 2020 has tested positive to Covid-19. In accordance with archdiocesan procedures and in compliance with the most recent health and safety guidance from the government, as a precautionary measure, St  Charalambos’ Church will be temporarily closed for the purposes of deep cleaning and sanitisation and there will be no Liturgy on Sunday 27 September 2020.

The Church Committee recognises the concerns of parishioners and the wider community and confirms that every precaution has been taken to minimise the spread of the virus and to ensure the safety of all. Following the deep cleaning, St  Charalambos’ Church will reopen again for public worship. ( PLEASE REFER TO OUR WEBSITE AND FACEBOOK PAGE FOR THE RE-OPENING).

We encourage ongoing vigilance in the face of the pandemic and localised outbreaks. Everyone should maintain social distancing measures and exercise good personal hand hygiene.

We further advise all those who attended the service on Saturday 19th September to self-isolate for the next 14 days. If you develop any symptoms of Covid-19, then you should request to be tested. For more information, please refer tohttps://www.gov.uk/coronavirus.

Finally, let us keep on praying that God will have mercy on us and deliver us from this fearful virus and all other sorrows and calamities.

Church opens again for public worship

posted 1 Jul 2020, 11:30 by Saint Charalambos

Dear Brothers and sisters in Christ,

On Sunday the 5th of July 2020, St Charalambos Greek Orthodox Church will once again open for public worship.  There will still be restrictions and we must all still do everything we can to limit the spread of the virus to protect each other, especially the most vulnerable. Thus, in accordance with the government guidelines on “restrictions to capacity”, services will take place with a congregation limited to a maximum of 15 people at any one time. Once the maximum number of 15 people has been reached, entry to the Church will close until the end of the service.

Fr Nicholas is looking into the possibility of holding a service on Saturday morning, in order to avoid the church being overcrowded on Sundays. Please contact us if you are interested in that.

As the government guidance advises that “the ceremonies and services should be concluded in the shortest reasonable time”, the service will commence at 8.30 am with Matins (Orthros) and the Divine Liturgy will follow at approximately 9.30 am. Memorial Services will be conducted after the Liturgy has finished and the church has been sanitized. Please get in touch with us to make the necessary arrangements.

Please follow the guidance on hand hygiene. Queue management is also important so the flow of groups in and out of the church can be carefully controlled in a socially distanced way, reducing the risk of congestion or contact. When queueing to receive Holy Communion continue to observe social distancing. Parents are responsible for their children's safety.

The Government Guidance stipulates that “Individuals should be prevented from touching or kissing objects that are handled communally” and we kindly request you to observe this rule. Please observe social distancing as much as you can. Worshippers are encouraged to wear face coverings to offer protection to others. Once the Liturgy is completed, we kindly ask you to depart promptly, to minimise the risk of contact and spread of infection.

None of these rules detracts from the centrality of our encounter with the Risen Christ in the Sacrament of the Eucharist. We ask everyone to respect and follow the guidance. Let us not forget St Paul’s advice “Let all things be done decently and in order... For God is not the author of confusion but of peace”. Please do follow the instructions of the church committee members who are volunteers and try their best “Let them do so with joy and not with grief, for that would be unprofitable for you.”

Let us give thanks to the Lord for being able to meet in His House and let us keep on praying that He will have mercy on us and deliver us from this fearful plague and all other sorrows and calamities.

posted 25 Jun 2019, 11:09 by Saint Charalambos

Our Church

posted 25 Jun 2019, 11:07 by Saint Charalambos   [ updated 26 Jun 2019, 11:58 ]

Our church depends on you, our members. The Orthodox Church in the UK is not supported directly by the government of UK or the governments of Greece/Cyprus. Nor is there any central church fund. Our Churches here are financially independent and self-funded by the community that they serve. So, in this church, all the costs of running and maintenance are met entirely by contributions from the people who attend.

The Gift Aid scheme

If you work in the UK and pay tax, the church, as a registered charity, can claim back 25% (the Standard Rate of Tax + 5%) from the government for any contribution you make through the Gift Aid scheme (as long as your contributions for the year do not exceed the tax you pay in the year). So at no extra cost to you, your donation is increased to us by 25%.

For example, if you give a £10 Gift Aid donation to the church, the church claims back the 25% tax and increases your donation to £12.50. Fill in a Gift Aid Form and be sure to write your full address & Post Code and sign and date it.

Standing Orders

Standing orders are particularly helpful, as they provide the parish with a predictable, steady income, which helps us to plan more effectively. If you are able to make regular monthly payments, then complete a Standing Order form and give it to your bank.

All baptised members of the Orthodox Church are entitled to become members of the parish. Please complete the membership form. There is a nominal fee of £6.00, per year, which can be paid by gift aid. This needs to be renewed each year in June, the end of the Church financial year. As a member, you can participate fully in the development of the parish, and we can communicate with you more easily.
